Farming for biodiversity

This website introduces ten demonstration farms established around Lithuania to promote agri-environmental measures and raise public awareness about globally threatened bird species dependent on favourable farming practices – the Great Snipe (Gallinago media), the Aquatic Warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola) and the Corncrake (Crex crex).

Biodiversity-oriented farming practices applied in these farms include habitat restoration, postponing grazing and mowing to protect bird nests and ensure breeding success. For many of the farmers this is a lifestyle choice, which is not only limited to economic factors, but is also closely linked to their environmental and social considerations.

Other project activities implemented by Baltic Environmental Forum Lithuania and Lithuanian Ornithological Society in 2009-2011 included collecting scientific information on the above-mentioned species, strengthening capacities of regional institutions responsible for application of agri-environmental measures, developing a distance-learning tool for farmers and raising public awareness through print publications.

And finally, the project focuses on facilitating networking and experience exchange among the ten demonstration farms. We believe that they serve as truly inspirational examples for anyone interested in farming sustainably, farming for biodiversity and living in harmony with nature.
